Connecting Infrared Surface Brightness Fluctuation Distances to Type Ia Supernova Hosts: Testing the Top Rung of the Distance Ladder

چکیده

We compare infrared surface brightness fluctuation (IR SBF) distances measured in galaxies that have hosted type Ia supernovae (SNIa) to estimated from SNIa light curve fits. show the properties of found IR SBF hosts are very different those exploding Cepheid calibrators, therefore, this is a direct test systematic uncertainties on estimation Hubble constant (Ho) using supernovae. The results Jensen et al. (2021; arXiv:2105.08299) provide large and uniformly sample which we directly with 25 host galaxies. divide flow into sub-samples best match divergent supernova seen hosts. further widths masses congruent SBF-calibrated refit stretch color correlations luminosity, use these revised parameters calibrate calibrators. Relative flow, average calibrator distance moduli vary by 0.03mag depending subsamples examined adds 1.8% uncertainty our estimate. Based Ho=74.6$\pm$0.9(stat)$\pm$ 2.7(syst) km/s/Mpc, consistent derived calibrated variables. conclude provides reliable calibration precision comparable significant saving telescope time.

The Infrared Surface Brightness Fluctuation Hubble Constant

We measured infrared surface brightness uctuation (SBF) distances to an isotropically-distributed sample of 16 distant galaxies with redshifts reaching 10,000 km s 1 using the near-IR camera and multi-object spectrometer (NICMOS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The excellent spatial resolution, very low background, and brightness of the IR uctuations yielded the most distant SBF measuremen...

Infrared Spectra of the Subluminous Type Ia Supernova 1999by

Near-infrared (NIR) spectra of the subluminous Type Ia supernova SN 1999by are presented which cover the time evolution from about 4 days before to 2 weeks after maximum light. Analysis of these data was accomplished through the construction of an extended set of delayed detonation (DD) models covering the entire range of normal to subluminous SNe Ia. The explosion, light curves (LC), and the t...

Potential of the Surface Brightness Fluctuation method to measure distances to dwarf ellipticals in nearby clusters

Abstract. The potential of the Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) method to determine distances to dwarf ellipticals in nearby clusters is investigated. We find that for the Fornax cluster, the SBF method yields reliable results down to very faint magnitudes, in our case down to MV ≃ −11 mag when observing for about 1 hour at good seeing with an 8m-class telescope in the I-filter. Comparison ...

The Type Ia Supernova

We present the rst measurement of the rate of Type Ia super-novae at high redshift. The result is derived using a large subset of data from the Supernova Cosmology Project as described in more detail at this meeting by Perlmutter et al. (1996). We present our methods for estimating the numbers of galaxies and the number of solar luminosities to which the survey is sensitive, the supernova detec...

Surface detonation in type Ia supernova explosions?

We explore the evolution of thermonuclear supernova explosions when the progenitor white dwarf star ignites asymmetrically off-center. Several numerical simulations are carried out in two and three dimensions to test the consequences of different initial flame configurations such as spherical bubbles displaced from the center, more complex deformed configurations, and teardrop-shaped ignitions....
